Our new Prez Celia is not just a pretty face. She’s also an expert in Genealogy and she uses her mad skills in her novel writing. Her workshop today told us how to create a simple timeline and fill it in using basic, organic strategy. I liked her pointers about taking something you know, say what a character does for a living, and then working backwards with this. Ie: if they are a 42 year old doctor, what year did they finish school.
What I loved was her suggestion to not only put in major events in a character’s life, but how the person experienced this, internalized it and how it influenced their future outlook and decisions. Of course! Such a helpful idea! This is especially juicy when it comes to plotting in the secrets in your story and when they will be revealed.
Adding a layer of world events helps readers to grab on and engage with the world inside your story and makes it all feel much more real.
A big thanks go out to Celia for this workshop! Great inspiration that’s got me staring off into space, thinking of all the possibilities!
