SATURDAY KEYNOTE ADDRESS
BARBARA SAMUEL
Boundaries – Barbara Samuel can play
them or break them, depending on the type of
boundary in question.
She ambles past all posted conventional boundaries
when it comes to the content of her books. Would
you classify them as romances? Do they fit better
in women’s fiction? Are they mainstream
hardcovers? What about the 16 Silhouette Special
Editions? Call them what you will. Samuel considers
them to be the “books of her heart,”
and lets others dwell on boundaries.
Boundaries for her characters, on the other
hand, all too often create the conflict and
emotion that endear Samuel novels to her thousands
of readers. Whether it is a woman being forced
out of what she’s always known or a man
returning home … friends breaking old
patterns or lovers settling into something warm
and comfortable, Samuel invents real characters
and then pushed them or pulls them around the
boundaries to which they either cling or try
so hard to avoid. It’s a dynamic, to which
readers can relate – and also that they
cannot resist.
As it happens, Samuel is also irresistible
to contest judges. In her 15 years of writing,
Samuel has been nominated six times to RWA’s
RITA award – winning the honor twice.
She has also won distinction inside and outside
the publishing community for introducing relevant
and troubling issues – such as domestic
violence – in her books, and creating
characters who cope in a healthy way.
Hear this award-winning USA Today best-selling
author as she shares the true rewards of doing
what she does at Saturday’s RWA Awards
Luncheon.
